However as the motto for this island states “the beach is just the beginning.” Steeped in history, the island gained independence in 1981, but a number of the British influences can still be seen in some of the historical sights on the island, such as Nelsons Dockyard and English Harbour. Other famous sights on the island include Shirley Heights, the island’s highest point and a popular sightseeing and party spot as the venue for the weekly barbecue and “jump up” with local bands. Antigua is also the perfect island to act as a two centre holiday location as it twins perfectly with surrounding islands of St Kitts, Nevis or Anguilla – all accessed via Antigua, and just a short flight away. A great destination for all types of holiday makers.
