TOBAGO
Home to the biggest and undoubtedly the best of the carnivals to take place in the Caribbean is Trinidad & Tobago, the island that is also home to carnival’s native Caribbean music, namely Calypso. Whilst Trinidad and Tobago are sister islands in terms of Government and Law, they could not be more different in terms of size and environment. Trinidad is a large and vibrant island spanning 1,864 square miles where the infrastructure is geared more heavily towards thriving business, shopping and a pulsating nightlife. In contrast the island of Tobago is a peace-seeker’s paradise covering just 116 square miles of natural beauty spots including rainforests, waterfalls and an array of pretty beaches. However, with both islands so close together, it takes a mere 20 minutes to fly from Tobago to Trinidad, making it the ideal location for spending a bustling weekend during your otherwise bustle free holiday on the idyllic island of Tobago.
ABOUT THE ISLAND
Tobago has become one of the Caribbean’s fastest growing tourist destinations. The island offers the perfect blend of a low key tourism infrastructure which provides an array of good quality accommodation, restaurants and tourist attractions without becoming overly developed. Match this with many of the original features that the island still enjoys including its laid back way of life, unspoilt beaches and scenery, and typical local cuisine and nightlife, and it is not hard to see why Tobago has grown in popularity. Getting to the island from London takes around 9-10 hours. British Airways flights depart twice weekly from London Gatwick, and once weekly with Virgin Atlantic. Excel Airlines, award winning charter airline, also departs twice a week from Gatwick.
ISLAND ATTRACTIONS AND EXCURSIONS
Tobago is an island known mainly for its natural attractions and features. Still relatively undeveloped iparticularly in the more northern parts of the island, a drive over to the north provides a wonderful way to see the real Tobago, and explore some of its less developed areas. Taking the route along the Caribbean side will treat you to scenic sights such as on your approach to Englishmans Bay. As you continue to head north, you will find Charlotteville, a quiet fishing village that will take you back in time to the Caribbean as it used to be. Further around the bay you will experience the breathtaking natural beauty of Speyside, which is a short distance to the rainforest. From here a short trip across to Little Tobago, a small off-shore island, would take you to a bird sanctuary that provides the breeding ground for hundreds of species of birds. As you head back to the south along the Atlantic coast road you will come to Scarborough, the small capital town which is overlooked by Fort George, the well preserved historical monument. Driving around the island is simple as driving is on the left side and there are basically just two roads which take you around the island. We can arrange for your hire vehicle to be delivered to your accommodation.
