ANTIGUA

Popular for its central location and its numerous beaches - one for every day of the year, Antigua provides the perfect setting to enjoy many of the pleasures the Caribbean has to offer. Steeped in history, the island gained independence on 1st November 1981, now a national holiday on the island. However, a number of the British influences can still be seen in some of the historical sights on the island, such as Nelsons Dockyard and English Harbour. Other famous sights on the island include Shirley Heights, the bluff overlooking English Harbour. Popular as a daytime sightseeing spot, with a bar and restaurant located on the site, the views take on a whole different scene on a Sunday when it becomes the venue for he weekly barbecue party and jump up with local bands.

FLIGHTS AND TOURS

With almost daily scheduled flights operating from the UK to Antigua, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operating from Gatwick, and BWIA operating from Heathrow twice a week, Antigua is one of the easiest of the Caribbean islands to access, and has one of the shortest flying times, with non-stop flights being the ‘norm‘ for the island, as the first stop on most two stop flights. Due to its central location, Antigua forms the gateway to a number of its neighbouring islands. Why not take advantage of the close proximity to some of these by taking a day trip? Barbuda is the sister island of Antigua and a day trip to this island forms the most relaxing and peaceful day imaginable, surrounded by an array of virtually deserted and unbelievably beautiful beaches. For the more adventurous, the island of Montserrat is just a short ferry ride away. With the ferry leaving first thing in the morning and returning in the evening and day tours available to take visitors around many of the sites on the island now infamous for the volcano, a trip to the ‘emerald isle of the west’ is still worthwhile. These are just two of many islands where day trips are possible, Culsen Travel can pre-arrange any day trips or tours you wish to include as part of your Antigua holiday experience, whether on or off the island.

WEATHER

Whilst Antigua, as all other Caribbean islands, is an all year around hot weather destination, it should be noted that Antigua is one of the Leeward islands and this group of islands falls within the hurricane belt. It is therefore one of the islands which is more likely to experience hurricane warnings and even actual hurricane weather during the most susceptible months of the year, which are traditionally September and October. Culsen Travel would therefore advise that these would be months best avoided when planning a holiday to this island. Visitors should bear in mind that a hurricane is classed as an ‘Act of God’ and insurance companies will usually not insure against the cancellation or curtailment of a holiday brought about through such an event.

ACCOMMODATION AND CAR HIRE

With a range of accommodation available on the island, we can offer something to suit all, from resort style self-catering accommodation at Galleon Beach Cottages or Jolly Harbour Villas, to the more deluxe villas where the housekeeper or cook ensure guests are not required to do anything other than relax and think about how they will spend another day on this wonderful island, such as the private villas located above Galleon Beach Resort. For visitors staying in one of our private villas on the island, you should note that no service charges are included in the cost of these properties, therefore you are required to tip your housekeeper at the end of your stay at your discretion.

Car hire is not essential if you are staying in one of the resort properties, as facilities such as restaurants, bars, a small supermarket and the beach are all available on-site or just a short distance away. For those staying in one of the more secluded villa locations such as Valley Breeze, Sehil or The Carib House, Culsen Travel recommend guests rent a car to make accessibility to facilities such as shopping and restaurants convenient. However, with so many beautiful beaches and places of interest to visit on the island, car hire is often the easiest and most inexpensive way to get around the island generally, as the bus service is limited in areas further away from the capital of St Johns, and stops operating altogether at night, and taxis can become expensive. Culsen Travel can arrange car hire, with vehicles delivered to and collected from your accommodation.
